Saturday Reflection

Daily Gospel Reflection May 9th 2020

Gospel                                                   JN 14:7-14

Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Philip said to Jesus,
“Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip?
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.
The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
or else, believe because of the works themselves.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father.
And whatever you ask in my name, I will do,
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”

Dear Friends and Family,

Jesus says “Believe” four times in four short verses.  “Believe me that I am in the Father… believe because of the works… whoever believes in me will do the works that I do.  Jesus makes it so simple for us, all we have to do is believe.  But that is where it gets hard as well.  Are we to believe so many fantastic ideas; Jesus and the Father are one, the father loves us, Jesus loves us, that we can do miraculous things in Jesus name?  But are they really that difficult to believe?  We can see in the world the reflections of a father in his son.  We can know the love of another or love another person without reservation.  We can see reflections of the divine in the world and the people around us.  But what brings us pause is our response.

Jesus tells us, that we, “will do the works that I(Jesus) “does”, and will do greater ones than these.”  Most people are comfortable understanding the great love that God has for us.  We see the sacrifice of his Son and witness in a graphic manner how far God is willing to go to save us.  But to think that we can do greater feats than Jesus causes us to doubt.  We doubt that God has such incredible plans for us.  We doubt that God wants to work through us, we doubt our relationship with God because we have failed him.  This is where our heart and faith in Jesus Word should inspire us.
We have the example of the Saints that have gone before us.  Study any Saint and you see how in small ways or large they did the miraculous.  How are they able to get out of their heads and open their hearts to God’s will?  If we look at the Scriptures; it is not the Saint but rather Jesus that works through the person to give God the glory.  Our task is to humbly ask the Father and surrendering to his will, and if it’s God’s will, the miraculous will follow. It’s the work of God that is realized with and through us. This is an action of the heart and not the head.  That is a promise that Jesus makes to us, all we have to do is open our hearts t
